On International Women’s Day, we will be celebrating a whole host of inspirational women in music. Join us as we solely play music by women composers or starring women soloists and conductors from 9am to 10pm.

At 9am Charles Nove will kick off International Women’s Day with a Screen Time by all women composers including Pinar Toprak, Bafta Game soundtrack nominee Yuka Kitamura and all the presenters of the current Scala series She Scores. 

During his show, Mark Forrest will have clips from Scala’s session ‘Scoring for Film and TV’ which was held at the Abbey Road Equalise Festival over the weekend. This special Q&A features guests Jocelyn Pook and Natalie Holt.

We also have a very special double edition of the Scala Sessions! With acclaimed trumpeter Tine Thing Helseth and experimental cellist Dobrawa Czocher who will be performing live in the Scala studio.

World-class conductor and Scala Radio Residency presenter Marin Alsop joins Penny Smith on Drive, with an hour of recordings starring some of her favourite women conductors including Nathalie Stutzmann and Alondra de la Parra.

From 7pm Oscar-winning composer Rachel Portman will be offering her advice to young female composers who want to break into the industry, as well as new music from Seonaid Aitken, Nainita Desai and Arabella Steinbacher.

To round off the day Mindfulness Music at 9pm includes the great violinist Tasmin Little, former Royal Harpist Catrin Finch and composers Isobel Waller-Bridge, Amy Beach and Enya.

Simon Mayo: 10am - 12pm, Sunday

Simon Mayo's much-loved show has a new home on a Sunday morning from 10, as he explores the essential albums to include in your classical music collection.

Darren Redick: 7 - 10pm - Friday, 8 - 10pm - Saturday & Sunday

Join Darren every Friday, Saturday and Sunday for two hours of uplifting classical favourites. Friday brings Classical Bangers, with Saturday bringing Saturday Night Scala and then Sunday Night Scala.

Jack Pepper: 3-5pm, Saturday & Sunday

Jack Pepper doubles up across the weekend with his show from 3 on Sunday afternoons filled with classical music, alongside a new time for his Culture Bunker programme on a Saturday.

Hannah Cox: 7 - 10am, Saturday & Sunday

Enjoy calming and uplifting music with Hannah Cox every weekend morning.

YolanDa Brown: 12-3pm, Sundays

Saxophonist and composer YolanDa Brown OBE brings her unique style to Sunday lunchtimes from 12-3.

Ayanna Witter-Johnson: 6-8pm, Saturday

Join composer, singer, songwriter and cellist Ayanna Witter-Johnson on Saturdays from 6pm.
