The death of a Dumfries woman on the Greek island of Crete is to be reinvestigated for a third time.

Authorities are reopening the case of Jean Hanlon, whose body was found in Heraklion Harbour in March 2009.

It was initially ruled the 53 year-old had drowned, but her family asked for a second post mortem after seeing her injuries.

It then emerged she had died before ending up in the water and her injuries pointed towards a struggle.

Police have never arrested anyone over Jean's death, but her family have once again been given fresh hope as detectives take another look at the case.

Jean's son Michael Porter told Clyde 1, "We decided to go down a different avenue with our mum's case, something that we haven't tried before.

"Several officials in Greece have had to make the decision on whether the case can be reopened and we have now received permission from the last authority.

"This is absolutely fantastic news."

Michael continued, "We're taking the lead and guidance from our lawyer, but even he is very excited about this.

"He has said this is a big thing for us. It's a lot different from the other two times when the case was open.

"This is obviously the outcome we have wanted for years. But we're not silly. We've been here before when the case has been reopened and soon closed again."

Michael and his family are now waiting for an update on what the next steps are from Greek authorities.

He added, "I want to thank everyone supporting us, including members of the Justice For Jean group. Without those people, we wouldn't be where we are.

"It's nice to know that we have such a huge backing and support behind Justice For Jean."
