A 68-year-old man is being treated in hospital following a serious assault in East Kilbride, in an incident that also saw a woman assaulted.

At around 2.55 on Tuesday morning a large group of people were causing a disturbance in the underpass in Telford Road. A woman came out of her home nearby to ask them to keep the noise down and was attacked.

The 68-year-old man saw this happening, and came to help the women, before he was assaulted with a weapon.

The group ran off and emergency services were called.

The man was taken by ambulance to Hairmyres Hospital where he is currently receiving treatment for a head injury. The woman didn’t require hospital treatment.

A 19-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with the incident, and was released on an undertaking to appear in court at a later date.

Detective Constable Gary Milligan from Cambuslang CID said: “Enquiries are at an early stage to establish the full circumstances surrounding this incident and I am appealing for anyone with information to come forward.

“In particular I would like to speak to any local residents who saw a group of men and woman causing a disturbance in the area, or who may have private CCTV footage.

“I would also ask any motorists with dash-cams who were travelling through at the time to please check their footage in case they have captured anything which could be of significance.

“Anyone with information is asked to contact Police Scotland through 101, quoting incident number 0289 of Tuesday, 12 October, 2021. Alternatively you can call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
