A mum says she is in shock and can't understand why anyone would hurt her son after he was killed in Dalry.

Sean McKay, 23, was walking home when he was attacked on St Margarets Avenue around 9pm on Sunday 10th October.

Despite attempts from residents nearby and emergency services, he couldn't be saved.

Mum Debbie told our reporter Natasha Richardson, "We are just all in shock and just cannot understand why anyone would want to hurt our Sean.

'My heart aches'

"We are so grateful and want to thank the people who tried desperately to save him. We are so thankful he wasn't on his own. We thank them from the bottom of our hearts.

"Our whole family is devastated. My heart aches to hold him in one of his hugs.

"He was always the joker. A happy man who doted on his girlfriend Chloe and their beautiful 15 month old son Oscar.

"We are so grateful for all the kind words and support from friends, family and strangers.

"Also for his Aunt who set up the Just Giving page and everyone who has donated."

'Killed for absolutely no reason'

Detective Inspector Stephen McCulloch, Saltcoats CID, is leading the investigation. He said: "This young man would appear to have been attacked and killed for absolutely no reason other than being in the same place as the man at the same time.

"There were a number of people in the street who came to the man's aid and called for an ambulance and we believe we have managed to speak to most of them, however, we would still appeal to anyone who was there but who has not yet come forward to police to get in touch.

"I'd also ask for motorists who may have dash-cams to check their footage from the street around the area, maybe between 8.50 pm and 9.10 pm, and to call police as well."

Sean's gran has also paid tribute on Facebook saying he was a 'much loved daddy.'

The attack on Sunday night came just 24 hours after a 17 year-old was stabbed a few streets away on Peden Avenue.

He had been involved in an altercation when he was wounded, but survived and was treated in hospital.

Police say the incidents aren't linked.
