The latest audience listening data (RAJAR) for Northern Ireland confirms that radio continues to hold its prime position as the communications platform of choice, with over 90% of adults in Northern Ireland tuning in every week (28 June 21 to 19 September 21).

Commercial radio leads the way, with Bauer Media NI (Cool FM, Downtown Radio and Downtown Country) capturing the lion’s share of the market – a total of 731,000 weekly listeners.

Collectively the RAJAR results reflect the impact of the pandemic and lockdown, with commercial radio in particular demonstrating resilience and value.

David Tighe NI Managing Director of Bauer Media Group, who was recently awarded Business Leader of the Year by the Belfast Chamber of Commerce, said:

“Despite the global pandemic and its implications across lives and businesses, we are delighted radio has remained such a trusted platform, relied on by so many, inspiring resilience and providing a sense of comfort.

“Commercial radio in particular has played it part by innovating and tailoring its offering to deliver authentic, compelling, and informed broadcasting which local audiences turn to, time and time again.

“We look forward to progressing this further as life after lockdown becomes the new norm.”
