Police were probing today (Friday) an arson attack involving a wheelie bin that was set alight and pushed into a property in Newtownards.

The incident happened in the Spelga Place area, in the early hours - and residents had to be evacuated as a result.

A PSNI spokesperson said: “At around 1:35am, it was reported to police that a wheelie bin was pushed against a backdoor of a property and set alight. No one was inside the premises during the incident, and two adjoining properties evacuated with no reports of any injuries. Colleagues from Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service extinguished the fire.

“Enquiries are continuing to establish the circumstances and police would appeal to anyone with any information to contact them on 101 quoting reference number 67 10/05/24.
