Just last week Tom Cruise took to Twitter to post the first look at Top Gun 2, captioning his photo '#Day1'. The photo showed Tom Cruise as Maverick facing away from the camera and looking towards a fighter jet, holding a helmet with his name on it. The actor also tagged film producer Jerry Bruckheimer and Skydance, the film studio behind the production.

At present not a huge amount is known about Top Gun 2 however most rumours surrounding the plot say it will be in the US, back in the Navy fighters weapons school, nicknamed 'Top Gun'. Maverick will now have progressed through the ranks and be at a higher level than he was in the original film.

Although Val is now believed to be involved no further details on how his character will be involved in the new plot have been revealed. In the original film Val played the part of Iceman, one of only a few United States Naval Aviators to be sent to Top Gun. He was known for his big ego and his bleached hair tips.

Now take a look at the biggest films from 2017.

20. The Lost City Of Z

2013's The Immigrant is sadly still waiting for a UK release, so praise be to the cinematic gods that James Gray's The Lost City Of Z arrived without delay. Based on the true-life tale of British explorer Percy Fawcett (Charlie Hunnam), this dense but always gripping biopic is part political drama, part family drama and part adventure.
On discovering the remnants of an indigenous society, Fawcett spent his life trying to prove his Amazonian finds until his unexplained disappearance in 1925. Containing one of the most beautiful scenes of the year, this undseen gem deserves, nay, demands your attention.
