Gerry Cinnamon reveals how he made his debut album from home

To celebrate five years since it's release

Author: Hazel ScottPublished 29th Sep 2022

Gerry Cinnamon has grown immensely in popularity since he came onto the music scene with his debut album in 2017. His first album 'Erratic Cinematic' included the tracks 'Sometimes' and 'Belter', and kick-started his success. He has since released another album as well as taking on the title of the UK's biggest independent artist.

As 'Erratic Cinematic' is now on track to achieve Platinum Certification this year, Gerry has reflected on how he released the album independently.

Explaining how he did it, he said: "The majority of the album was recorded in my wee flat in the East End, the other half in the studio.

"I bought an old Mac and some mics and stayed up for months trying to get my head around using a Mac for the first time, gainstaging, mic placement, room acoustics, compression, reverb decays, delay sync, automation, sampling, mixing, mastering and everything in between."

He continued: "The album was released on its own with no label or marketing or radio or management or strategy or plans to even do anything other than satisfy all the folk wanting the tunes.

"Weeks before the release I was waking up in my flat to the sound of massive pallets of CDs and records getting dumped in my street. All needing moved, unboxed, unsealed, signed, resealed, packaged and posted to the 1000s of folk that had pre-ordered."

Giving a mention to fans, he added: "Cheers to everyone who’s ever bought the records or came to a gig or even a good word. I appreciate it all and when I think about it I struggle to get my head round the numbers."

Gerry Cinnamon at Hampden Park

Following on from his first record, Gerry released his second album 'The Bonny' in April 2020 and as well as becoming certified gold, it also became the third biggest selling UK album of the year.

To wrap up his 2022 UK tour, Gerry played two massive shows at Hampden Park in Glasgow this summer, which was the first time a Scottish artist or an independent artist had sold out two nights at the football stadium. He made history, as he played to over 100,000 fans in the homecoming gig.

While performing at Hampden Park, Gerry Cinnamon played fan favourties from his music catalogue as well as his unreleased song 'Sacred' and a tribute to Billy Connolly. As photos of the Big Yin appeared behind Gerry, he played his own rendition of 'I Wish I Was in Glasgow'.
