The nominations for the Virgin TV British Academy Television Awards (BAFTA) were announced earlier today.

The Netflix series The Crown has come in top of the nominations with no less than five possible awards including Best Drama for the series as a whole.

Leading Actress Claire Foy is up for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II, actors Jared Harris and John Lithgow have both been nominated for Supporting Actors and Vanessa Kirby for Supporting Actress.

When it comes to the entertainment shows it's no surprise that Ant and Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway has been nominated for Entertainment Programme. Unusually for the Geordie duo they have missed out on the Entertainment Performance category with Adam Hills, Claudia Winkleman, Graham Norton and Michael McIntyre receiving nods.

This year Coronation Street has also missed out on a nomination for Soap & Continuing Drama, with Casualty, EastEnders, Emmerdale and Hollyoaks up against each other.

BAFTA are calling on the public to vote for their favourite Must-See Moment of 2016, moments in the running include Michelle Obama doing Carpool Karaoke and the Snakes V Iguanas race from Planet Earth II.

The BAFTA TV Awards will take place on 14th May at London's Royal Festival Hall, hosted by comedian Sue Perkins who will be taking over the reigns from Graham Norton. Speaking about hosting the awards she said,

"I am thrilled to be hosting the Virgin TV British Academy Television Awards this year.

"Not only is it one of the highlights of the television calendar, it’s also a superbly fun night and an opportunity to celebrate the incredible British talent we have behind our very best TV programmes."
