Have you watched Netflix original series Maid yet? The hard-hitting true story of young single mother Alex who escapes an abusive relationship and finds a cleaning job in search of a better life for her and her daughter.

The series, inspired by the memoir Maid: Hard Work, Low Pay, and a Mother's Will to Survive by Stephanie Land, landed on Netflix on 1st October and has 10 episodes.

As well as the incredible and emotive acting, fans have now discovered that Margaret Qualley, who plays the lead role of Alex, is acting alongside her real-life mum, Andie MacDowell, who plays her on-screen mother Paula.

Taking to Twitter, fans expressed their shock at the revelation, with some saying that the fact they are related off screen explains why the scenes are so ‘harrowing’ and their ‘natural’ on-screen chemistry.

One viewer wrote: 'The mom and daughter on Maid being mom and daughter in real life makes so much sense…it just works.'

Another said: 'The mom that played Alex mom on maid is her mom in real life. That’s cool asf.'

One more added: 'On the last episode of #Maid and only just found out they are real life mum and daughter #noway'

Before the show aired, Andie opened up about how she found the role "intimidating" at first and Margaret actually suggested her for the part.

Appearing on Graham Norton Show, she said: "It wasn’t easy because she was so mean and cruel and horrible to her daughter.

"It was interesting that my daughter suggested me for the role and at first, I thought, ‘My God, does she see me like that?’ Of course, she doesn’t but it was a little intimidating!

"It was so much fun but so challenging for me because I have never played a character like that before. It was great to do something different and to show people what I am capable of."

Margaret is Andie and ex-husband Paul Qualley’s youngest of three children and the pair have appeared at red carpet events with each other over the years.

Maid is available to stream now on Netflix.
