Coronavirus case "highly likely" in Scotland as preparations stepped up

Scotland’s Chief Medical Officer says it’s highly likely we’ll see a positive case of Coronavirus here – as the illness continues to spread.

The First Minister’s chaired a Scottish Government Resilience meeting to discuss the country's preparations.

This follows outbreaks in northern Italy and other parts of the world.

Eleven people have now died from Covid-19 in Italy - with Britons returning from there told to self-isolate.

Health Secretary Jeane Freeman who also attended the meeting said:

“Though the risk to individuals remain low, and all test results have come back negative so far, the Chief Medical Officer has advised that it is highly likely that we will see a positive case in Scotland as coronavirus continues to spread.

“We are expecting an outbreak and are working hard to ensure we have plans in place to contain it as best we can. The NHS and Health Protection Scotland have an established plan to respond to anyone who becomes unwell.

“Scotland is well-prepared for a significant outbreak of coronavirus but there is currently no treatment or vaccine.”

People who are travelling back from northern parts of Italy, Iran, special care zones in South Korea, and China’s Hubei province are all being told to self-isolate.

Scotland’s Chief Medical Officer Dr Catherine Calderwood said:

“Scotland remains well-equipped to deal with any positive cases of coronavirus. While all tests here have so far been negative, we have established plans in place to ensure a rapid response in the event of a confirmed case.

“However, early detection of any positive cases will be vital, to contain the virus and stop it spreading. That’s why it’s vital people stay up to date with the latest health and travel advice, and take the same basic precautions they would to avoid colds or influenza, such as washing hands and covering their nose and mouth with a tissue when coughing or sneezing.”

Meanwhile in Tenerife, health officials have quarantined a hotel after two cases of Covid-19 - with a number of British tourists stuck there.
