The Commodores had a string of hits in 70s and 80s, including 'Three Times a Lady', 'Nightshift' and 'Still', but it now looks like the group could be due to make a music comeback, with one big difference.

Whilst in their heyday, the Commodores, fronted by Lionel Richie had huge success, since the late 80s the band haven't been in the charts much, but that could all be about to change.

Now, on the 52nd anniversary of the formation of the group, speaking to Billboard, William 'Wak' King who was the co-founder says he's been making new music.

"It's very exciting right now," he said, "Everybody's kinda pumped. It's taken a while to get everybody in the frame of mind to get back in the studio, but we've been cutting four tracks and we want to get them completed and figure out what to do with them."

However, it seems neither Lionel or original lead guitarist Thomas McClary will be involved with the band's reunion.

The members of the Commodores met in the late 60s when they were at Tuskegee University, Alabama. In 1971 they scored their first UK Number 1 with 'Three Times a Lady', having success well into the 80s with 'Nightshift' reaching Number 5.

A remastered version of the music video which has been uploaded to YouTube had received more than 36 million views in 10 years.

Since leaving the Commodores in the early 80s Lionel Richie has enjoyed a successful solo career, with hits such as 'Hello' and 'Dancing on the Ceiling'. He continues to tour now and is currently performing in the US.
