A new tribute statue to Cilla Black is to be placed outside the original Cavern Club in Liverpool.

The girl from Scottie Road, who went on to be a superstar singer and TV presenter passed away aged 72 last August at her holiday home in Spain, after she fell and hit her head which brought on a stroke.

Now her sons Robert, Ben and Jack Willis are donating the new statue as a thank you and a gesture of gratitude for all the support they got from the people of Liverpool after their mothers death.

Eldest son Robert said: "We wanted it to be something for the people of the city as well as being a memorial to my mum. Hopefully that’s something that will be a positive addition to the city and something people will enjoy interacting with.”

“I remembered whenever we filmed in Mathew Street, she always made a point of saying ‘well that’s not where the Cavern was, the original entrance was over there’.

“That original spot is marked with a plaque and a photo, but if you watch, especially the tourists, they don’t really stop there because they just see the new Cavern and go straight for that.

“So we felt given that my mum worked at the Cavern as well as performed there, she was on the staff as it were, the most fitting place for her statue would be something that would serve a purpose to mark the original entrance."

The final look of the bronze statue is still to be decided. But it will portray Cilla as a young woman in the early 1960s, with trademark bob and wearing a ‘mod’ dress.
