A beloved Prestwick bakery has closed its doors for the final time after almost 100 years of serving.

The Electric Bakery first opened in 1929, but this morning its closure was confirmed by a sign in the Kyle Street shop’s window.

It read: “We would like to take this opportunity to thank all our loyal customers for supporting our family business.”

Branches in Ayr have also closed, with staff reportedly being told of the devastating news on Saturday.

Local councillor Hugh Hunter said: “I was extremely disappointed to learn of the closure of the electric bakery.

“My thoughts are mostly with the families who’ve been affected by the job losses.

“Electric Bakery’s basically been an institution in Prestwick for the forty odd years I’ve lived there, and it’s so sad to learn of its closure.”

Many people from the area have taken to social media to express their sadness at the loss.

One customer said: "Lemon meringue pies were amazing don’t know anywhere else that has that special recipe."

Another commented: "That is sad, where are we gonna do without their amazing pastry cases now?"

The loss comes just a year after the bakery was put up for sale by boss David Murray.
