Puregym has sites across the UK including Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire and Hertfordshire.

Puregym has apologised 'unreservedly' after a post was made by their Luton and Dunstable branch earlier today.

The post featured a workout entitled '12YearsOfSlave' and was said to be the groups workout of the month to celebrate Black History Month.

The post explains the name of the workout comes from the 'epic movie'12 Years a Slave, which was an adaptation of the 1853 memoir Twelve Years a Slave by Solomon Northup who was kidnapped and sold as a slave in Washington DC in 1941.

The post went on to compare the workout to slavery saying 'slavery was hard and so is this'.

The post has since been removed from the social media pages of the branch, along with a previous post which was a quote from Martin Luther King Jr following comments about the workout being made on it.

A statement has been provided from PureGym:

“PureGym apologises unreservedly for a post made today by our gym in Luton. This post is wholly unacceptable, was not approved or endorsed by the company and was removed as soon as it was brought to our attention.

"Each of our 271 gyms has its own social media channels which are run locally. We take this matter extremely seriously and are urgently investigating how and why this post was made.”
