Conservatives lose seven seats in Basingstoke

The conservatives have lost seven seats on Basingstoke and Deane Borough council.

The result means the independent coalition led by Paul Harvey will likely continue to run the council.

18 seats - one in each ward - were up for grabs.

Here's the make up of the council following this year's election:

Conservatives 16 - down 7

Labour Party 11 - up 1

Lib Dems 11 up 2

Basingstoke and Deane Independents 10 up 2

Independents 3 - no change

Green Party 2 up 1

Women's equality Party 1 - new party joins the council

Co-council leader Gavin James says he hopes the independent coalition group will continue to lead the council:

"It's a partnership that works really well we've already achieved so much and put alot things in place so hopefully we can carry on doing what we're doing it seems the public want us to so we have a responsibility to do what they tell us to."

The women's equality party candidate Stacy Hart beat the Conservatives in Hatch warren and Beggerwood. The party was founded nearly ten years ago by broadcaster Sandi Toksvig and journalist Catherine Mayer. It's the first time the party has secured a seat at borough council levelC
