A man is due to appear in court after being charged in connection with the discovery of a cannabis farm in the centre of Galashiels.

Plants with an estimated street value of £150,000 have been seized following a raid on the former Why Not? store in Channel Street yesterday (Thursday).

It's the third cultivation to be found in an empty retail unit in the same street in three months.

In March, two cultivations worth more than £2 million were seized following raids on the former Woolworths and Ladbrokes stores.

Five men - believed to be of Eastern European origin - were arrested in connection with the earlier raids in Channel Street.

It was the biggest haul of drugs ever seized in the Borders in a single day.

Part of the rear of the property in Overhaugh Street in Galashiels was sealed off following the latest raid.

Referring to the latest arrest, a Police Scotland spokesperson said: “On Thursday, May 2nd, 2024, a cannabis cultivation estimated at £150,000 was discovered within a building on Channel Street, Galashiels.

“A 37-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with this recovery.

“He is due to appear at Edinburgh Sheriff Court on Friday, 3 May, 2024."
