Conservative MPs across Cornwall are starting to react to Liz Truss stepping down as Prime Minister.

It comes as earlier today, the current PM announced she would be stepping down after just 45 days in office.

In a statement, Cherilyn Mackrory, MP for Truro and Falmouth, said: "During the leadership campaign, I gave Liz Truss my support publicly because I thought she was the best candidate to solve the unique issues facing Cornwall.

"Unfortunately, we did not get the chance to tackle these issues in-depth during her short premiership. However, I wish to put on record my thanks to the Prime Minister for delivering the Energy Price Guarantee, cutting National Insurance, and pursuing a vision for a high growth, low tax economy.

“I shared that ambition, but clearly, some policies were not implemented in a way that secured the confidence of the markets and the British people. That is why, with regret, I feel the Prime Minister was right to resign..."

Steve Double, MP for St Austell and Newquay, wrote a statement earlier today calling for the Prime Minister to step down.

He told us he thinks it was the right time for Liz Truss to resign as Prime Minister.

He said: "It's very difficult for her but I think the events of yesterday with the sacking of the home secretary and the chaotic scenes around the vote really showed that the government under her leadership wasn't functioning properly.

"It's really important that we have a government that is able to provide the leadership and stability we need and really show it has the answers to address these really big challenges we face.

"Our focus has to be what's right for the country".

Derek Thomas also wrote in a statement: "Although she wasn't my first choice, I supported Liz Truss because I believed she would deliver the growth this country needs.

"She herself accepted in her resignation speech she will not be able to do so..."
