The 18 mile circular route celebrates creation

A new Pilgrimage route is launching through Devon’s Teign Valley this weekend.

The Eden Way is an 18 mile circular route that celebrates creation and is designed to be walked over two days.

The route includes several pubs and cafes with walkers invited to stop at each church along the way and read a reflection on the creation story.

The creation story has been written by the Rev’d Ruth Frampton, Rector of the Teign Valley and Haldon Hill Mission Community.

She said “The Eden Way offers an opportunity to walk mindfully through the beauty of God’s creation in the Teign Valley.

“Come and experience the contrasts: wild and cultivated, bleak and densely foliaged, craggy quarries and gentle fields grazed by sheep and cattle, in an environment very conscious of the climate emergency.

“It is an ideal place for a pilgrimage to explore and celebrate the abundance of God’s creation in the context of the ambiguities and challenges of the 21st century.

“Our six churches offer quiet space for meditation and reflection, rest and refreshment. Walk for fun or come and be a pilgrim!”

The Eden Way is the fifth new route supported by Devon Pilgrim since the project was launched in 2021.

As part of the launch this weekend there is also a chance to walk the route as a group, with a time for guided meditation at each church and refreshments at various points.

The walk sets off from Dunsford at 09.45 on Saturday.

Jonathan Yandall, Project Support Officer for Growing the Rural Church, which runs Devon Pilgrim, said

“It is great to see the creativity and hard work which has gone into developing the Eden Way.

“I have walked the route and it is a great chance to retreat from daily routines and reflect on the creation story in a valley which is one of Devon’s hidden gems.”

Whilst on the walk you can also enjoy the villages of Dunsford, Bridford, Christow, Ashton, Doddiscombsleigh and Dunsford.
