Tour of Britain organisers 'proud' to be coming to Dorset
The county's preparing for its first ever visit of the famous cycling event
The countdown to the Tour of Britain’s first-ever visit to Dorset for what promises to be one of the most picturesque stages in race history is underway.
On Saturday 10th September, the UK’s leading cycling event heads to the historic county and promotes it to an international audience.
Over 100 of the world’s best riders will tackle a 175.9km (109.4mi) stage that begins on the Esplanade at West Bay and culminates in the heart of Ferndown.
The route will pass alongside the historic Jurassic Coast, through Abbotsbury, Weymouth, Dorchester, West Lulworth, Corfe Castle, Wareham, Bere Regis, Blandford Forum and Wimborne Minster.
A large crowd is expected to turn out to watch this free-to-attend sporting spectacle.
Andy Hawes, Tour of Britain race director, said:
"We've been planning with Dorset for little over a year now as we have been speaking with Dorset Council and getting it signed off by the cabinet.
"It's very exciting that the race is coming to the county for the first time and there has been a lot more preparations than usual to make sure that this stage of the event is a huge success.
"It's been a pleasure for me to design this stage in Dorset as a child I came to holiday here extensively so for me planning the route really sparked a lot of childhood memories."
