Could you represent the town on the local authority?

Weymouth Town Councillor Trefor Morgan is resigning from his seat.

The Liberal Democrat councillor for Westham West is stepping down due to ill health.

In a statement, Weymouth Town Council has thanked Trefor 'for all his hard work' and 'wish him all the best for the future'.

But his resignation does mean there's a space available on the authority.

There's now a campaign to find someone who could take over the Westham West seat.

Cllr Colin Huckle, Mayor of Weymouth, said:

“We are calling on undiscovered community heroes who are passionate about Weymouth and Westham West in particular to put themselves forward to be elected to sit on Weymouth Town Council.

“The work our council does is remarkably diverse, from helping to get projects like The Marsh skatepark and parkour area off the ground, to representing the needs of your community and making decisions on services and projects the council would like to take forward. Being a town councillor can be incredibly rewarding. You can make a difference to local communities and help improve residents' lives, so why not stand for election?”

If people put themselves forward for the role, an election will decide who takes up the council seat.

That vote would take place in April, if needed.

If there aren't enough candidates, a new councillor will be chosen by co-option.

Anyone who wants to stand as a candidate needs to be at least 18 years, must be British or a citizen of the Commonwealth or European Union and must be registered to vote in the local area.
