"Leadership and clarity" needed over Covid measures in schools, says Union
Suffolk County Council is one local authority to re-introduce mandatory mask wearing in all schools and colleges.
Leadership and clarity over Schools Covid measures is needed from Government, before they return next week.
That's according to Keith Anderson, East Anglia's regional officer for the National Association of Schoolmasters Union of Women Teachers.
He told us that the Government should take inspiration from devolved administrations and introduce a nation-wide approach:
"In Scotland, they have decided to universally maintain their measures like washing hands, regularly cleaning down surfaces and making sure that secondary school pupils continue to wear masks. But here, we're still in Plan A, we haven't moved to Plan B and because of that you're seeing local authorities taking it into their own hands".
He says that local councils should not be made to make these decisions alone:
"Local authorities are taking over Government's role, because they are failing to do that. We should follow the science and what the scientists are saying is that we should re-introduce masks. If the decision is taken, we'll of course follow that, but we need clarity and national guidelines."
