Preliminary works for the A303 Stonehenge tunnel project have been halted, while we await the result of a legal challenge against the scheme.

Campaigners are asking the High Court for the right to appeal the planning permission given by the Transport Secretary.

In the meantime, National Highways is holding a series of public consultation events - starting today (Saturday 27th April) in Amesbury.

They're being held at:

  • Antrobus House, Amesbury, SP4 7HH - 11.00am to 4.00pm, Saturday 27th April
  • Shrewton Village Hall, SP3 4JY - 11.00am to 4.00pm, Monday 29th April
  • Salisbury Guildhall. SP1 1JH - 11.00am to 6.00pm, Tuesday 30th April
  • South Newton Village Hall, SP2 0PJ - 11.00am to 4.00pm, Friday 3rd May
  • Durrington Village Hall, SP4 8AD - 11.00am to 6.00pm, Tuesday 7th May

The events are also a chance to find out more about the current closure of the A360 north of Salisbury, and the utilities works that are ongoing there in preparation for the A303 Stonehenge project.

Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks are carrying out underground cabling to provide a high voltage power supply for the project’s proposed tunnel and to power the tunnel once constructed.

The A360, cutting across the A303 north to south at Longbarrow roundabout, is anticipated to be closed until mid-July and SSEN representatives will be attending the information events, to answer any questions along with National Highways’ A303 project team.

Andrew Clark, National Highways’ Senior Project Manager for the scheme, said:

“We’re continuing to work with heritage groups and other stakeholders, and the information events offer the opportunity for local communities, businesses and other interested parties to find out a little more.

“It’s a chance to meet face to face with the teams and for local residents and groups to ask questions about the current enabling works, and to find out more about the scheme in general, and we encourage people to come along.”
