The body of a man has been pulled from the River Thames following a search after reports of someone disappearing under the water.

Surrey Police were called to near the Desborough Sailing Club in Shepperton, Surrey on Thursday Evening (11 August) after a concern for safety.

A man was reported by members of the public to have gone under water in the river but had not resurfaced.

Surrey Police attended the scene, as well as other emergency services. Surrey Fire and Rescue Service, South East Coast Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust, a dive team and Surrey Search & Rescue were all in attendance.

Police say a man's body was recovered from the river in the early hours of this morning, and that his kin have been notified.

Surrey Police said:

"We are treating the death as unexplained, but do not believe at this stage that there was anyone else involved. A file will be prepared and passed to the coroner."

High temperatures are continuing to hit the country, including Surrey.

Advice from the fire service is to not jump into unknown water as it may be colder and shallower than it appears.

People are still being urged to stay safe when entering open water.
