Consultation begins for new order to tackle antisocial behaviour in Aldershot town centre

Rushmoor Borough Council is launching a new public consultation on plans to introduce a Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) for Aldershot town centre in an effort to have a stronger hold on tackling antisocial behaviour.

If the order is approved it would see restrictions in place to control a range of antisocial behaviour that could be affecting the quality of life of local people.

The restrictions proposed in the PSPO for Aldershot would allow the police and council to seize alcohol as well as making greater use of Fixed Penalty Notices in the town centre. It would also include the ability to tackle antisocial drinking, urinating and defecating in public.

Some of those who will be consulted include Hampshire Constabulary, Aldershot Civic Society and owners of town centre shopping centres. The MOD, the Hampshire Police and Crime Commissioner and owners or occupiers of land in the area will also be consulted.

Rushmoor Borough Council’s Cabinet member for Operational Service, Councillor Maurice Sheehan, said:

“A PSPO in Aldershot town centre would allow us to tackle some of the most disruptive antisocial behaviour, so that people can feel confident and safe when visiting the town centre. With the significant investment in regeneration ongoing we want Aldershot to be a place where all will feel welcome.”

The new measures would run alongside the council's work in Aldershot and Farnborough supporting vulnerable individuals with other statutory agencies.

Anyone who would like to comment on the proposals should go to www.rushmoor.gov.uk/PSPO. The survey runs from February 7 to March 21 and is open to residents, businesses and visitors to Aldershot.
