Bristol Rovers defender George Friend says he's stepping back from professional football.

He has had an illustrious career, and last summer, signed for the Gas on a one-year deal, previously having played for the side more than a quarter of a century before.

The 36-year-old is staying with Rovers as the Director of Football - something he says is 'very apt' as it's where he started his career.

In a statement shared on the Bristol Rovers social media account, he also gave a 'special mention' to Middlesbrough FC, calling captaining the side as 'my proudest moment of all'.

The Devonian played for a number of clubs since he started in the professional game back in 2005 - beginning his career at Exeter City, where he made his debut that season, when they took on Forest Green Rovers.

His career took him to Wolverhampton Wanderers, Doncaster Rovers, Middlesbrough, and Birmingham City - as well as taking spells on-loan to Milwall, Southend United, and Scunthorpe United.

George said: "I have decoded to retire from playing professional football.

"Kerri, Dad and Mum, you've been and you are truly amazing.

"My family and close friends have been my rock through the last 20 years in football, their support and love is unwavering and I'm so grateful, thank you.

"I've learnt something from every single person on my journey. I want to thank all those who helped me achieve more than I could have ever imagined. Teammates, staff, managers, owners, and fans...

"A special mention has to be given to Middlesbrough FC. What I achieved, felt and experienced there was more than football. Thank you.

"My dream was to play in the Premier League. Walking out as captain is my proudest moment of all.

"I now remain determined and ambitious to succeed in my role here at Rovers. It is where I started my footballing journey as a youngster and it feels very apt that it's where I will finish playing.

"I have built some strong relationships here and I believe in the club, the people, and the area. Never give up!"
