Humber Teaching NHS Foundation Trust’s Your Health service is highlighting the support available to carers in the East Riding this week.

This year’s theme is ‘making caring visible, valued and supported’ and it is an opportunity to highlight the challenges unpaid carers face and recognise the contribution they make to families and communities throughout the UK.

One of the main goals of this week is also to help people who do not think of themselves as having caring responsibilities, to identify as carers and access much-needed support.

The NHS says there are 6.5 million people in the UK who are carers. They are looking after a family member or friend who has a disability, mental or physical illness or who needs extra help as they grow older. It says being in a caring role can impact on all aspects of your life, from relationships to health, finances and the work associated with being a carer should not be underestimated.

Humber Teaching NHS Foundation Trust’s Your Health Prevention and Lifestyle team are reaching out to all adults in the East Riding who are looking for that support.

Offering bespoke one-to-one motivation and advice-based sessions, the team is on hand to help you feel empowered to improve your lifestyle. Some examples of the support the team can offer you are:

• Carer Advice and Support

• Weight Management

• Nutrition

• Alcohol reduction

• Emotional wellbeing

• Welfare

• Smoking Cessation

• Lessen Isolation and loneliness

• Relationships

It is the hope that, while the team offers advice and support specifically for carers, helping them to seek the right help and signposting to specialist services, Carers will also come forwards to prioritise their own health and wellbeing needs and seek support for additional lifestyle changes they may wish to make.

Natalie Belt, Service Manager at YOURhealth, Humber Teaching NHS Foundation Trust, said:

“Our team provides an opportunity for Carers to come forwards for help and guidance, whilst also having the specialist knowledge to help you develop new methods and strategies to improve your overall wellbeing.

Each individual we work with gets a personalised improvement plan which aims to motivate and support them through their journey to better health.”
