Some East Riding households are set for a two-week delay in their bins being emptied after the council called off collections due to take place on the day of the Queen’s funeral.

East Riding Council said blue and brown bin collections set for Monday, September 19, will no longer go ahead after previously exempting them from service cancellations.

Bin collections in Hull will also not go ahead because they take place on Tuesdays.

Essential adult and children’s social care work is now the only council service continuing as normal in the East Riding on Monday.

Different parts of the East Riding have their bins collected on different days, meaning some will be affected by the cancellation while others will not.

Monday was set to see some blue bins, used for recycling, taken and some brown bins, designated for food and garden waste.

Other bin collections scheduled for Tuesday are set to go ahead as normal, while the next Monday ones are due to be on October 3.

It comes as East Riding Council said public-facing buildings including libraries and leisure centres would close on Monday during the funeral of the late Monarch.

The council also cancelled committee meetings scheduled for this week following the Queen’s death on Thursday, September 8.

Council business is set to resume from Tuesday once the national mourning period ends.

There are plans to open several East Riding venues for people to sign books of condolence on Sunday.

Sunday evening is set to see a minute’s silence as part of a national moment of reflection for the late Monarch.

People can also leave floral tributes in public gardens in villages and towns across the East Riding until the end of Monday.

Households can find out if their bin collections are delayed by using the council’s online postcode checker.
