Author: Anna Sky MagliolaPublished 20th Jun 2022

In 2021, we saw some fantastic songs being released from the likes of Ed Sheeran, David Guetta, Little Mix, The Weeknd, and Dua Lipa. Now, the annual chart of the Top 10 most played tracks of 2021 and most played artists of 2021 has been complied to Phonographic Performance Limited (PPL).

Last year we saw some massive collabs being released such as Joel Corry, Raye and David Guetta's 'Bed', Galantis, David Guetta and Little Mix's 'Heartbreak Anthem' and Calvin Harris featuring Tom Grennan's 'By Your Side', so there's no surprise they make an appearance this list.

Take a look through the most played tracks of 2021:

10) Joel Corry, Raye and David Guetta - 'Bed'

Mega producer Joel Corry, popstar RAYE and superstar DJ David Guetta teamed up on their hit song 'BED'. The song was a huge success for the trio reaching Number 3 in the UK. The song was also nominated for Song of the Year at the BRIT Awards 2022, but lost out to Adele's 'Easy On Me'.

9) Miley Cyrus - 'Midnight Sky'

'Midnight Sky' was released in 2020, but was still incredibly popular in 2021. Miley told us the inspiration behind the song saying: "At the top of 2020, I actually kinda started writing this song about one of my last nights out before we all went into lockdown. I went to this place that had like 400 disco balls on the ceiling..."

8) Years & Years - 'Starstruck'

Years & Years' 'Starstruck' was Olly Alexander's first song after Years & Years became a solo project. The intergalactic inspiration for the song came from Olly's experience writing the record in the countryside.

7) Galantis, David Guetta and Little Mix - 'Heartbreak Anthem'

Galantis, David Guetta and Little Mix's epic collaboration 'Heartbreak Anthem' was released in May 2021. The song was Little Mix's second release as trio, since Jesy Nelson left the band in December 2020.

6) Rag’n’Bone Man - 'All You Ever Wanted'

Rag'n'Bone Man released 'All You Ever Wanted' in January 2021 and told us about his lead single from his second album saying: "It's a little ode to 80's new wave music and it's a bit of Rock n Roll to get the album started.
"I wrote this song about feeling sad about going back to places that I used to love when I was growing up and now they're just flats or whatever. It's got a little vibe about gentrification, but its upbeat as well so it's not too sad!"

5) Coldplay - 'Higher Power'

When 'Higher Power' was released in May 2021, it was Coldplay's first new music in 18 months. The music video featured holographic dancers, aliens and robots, giving us some serious futuristic vibes.

4) The Weeknd - 'Blinding Lights'

The Weeknd's 'Blinding Lights' became a massive hit in early 2020 when it was used on a TikTok challenge during the first lockdown. However, its popularity continued and it is now The Weeknd's most successful song to date.

3) Tom Grennan - 'Little Bit Of Love'

'Little Bit Of Love' was Tom's fourth single from his second album 'Evering Road'. The song was a Top 10 hit for the singer and is about the 'mental struggle of moving on, or going back to a relationship'.

2) Calvin Harris featuring Tom Grennan - 'By Your Side'

'By Your Side' was the first time Calvin Harris and Tom Grennan had released a single together. Calvin told us why he decided to work with Tom saying: "The lad has an amazing voice. What first attracted me to him was I followed him on social media because I liked some of his tunes and he's the most positive man that I see on the socials.
"He's always smiling, he's always got a positive message but not in a cheesy way. He comes across amazingly well."

1) Ed Sheeran - 'Bad Habits'

It's not much of a surprise that Ed Sheeran has the top spot in this list. Ed Sheeran's 'Bad Habits' was released in June 2021 and was a Number 1 hit in 28 countries, including the UK. It was also nominated for a Grammy award.

Also, released by PPL is the most played artists of 2021, and there's no surprise that the Top 10 list includes the likes of Ed Sheeran, Calvin Harris, Coldplay and The Weeknd.

1) Ed Sheeran

2) David Guetta

3) Dua Lipa

4) Little Mix

5) Coldplay

6) The Weeknd

7) Justin Bieber

8) Calvin Harris

9) Taylor Swift

10) Pink

This time around, Ed has done the double, becoming the most played artist and having the most played track of last year.

The last time Ed did the double was in 2017, after the release of his album 'Divide' and his single 'Shape Of You'. Meanwhile, only one other artist has done the double, and that was Adele back in 2011, with 'Rolling In The Deep' and her album '21'.

You can hear songs by many of these artists on heat radio.

Now take a look through Ed Sheeran's amazing career:

Career beginnings

Ed comes from a very creative family - his parents are in the art world and his brother is a composer, so it's no surprise that Ed was encouraged towards music from a young age. He began singing at his local church from the age of four, and learned to play the guitar at 11, even writing songs whilst still at high school. He made it into the National Youth Theatre in London and also performed with Youth Music Theatre UK in 2007.

2004: First record 'Spinning Man'

In 2004, Ed started recording his music and independently released his first collection of work, 'Spinning Man'. In 2005, he released 'The Orange Room' EP which featured four tracks - 'I Love You', 'Addicted', 'Misery' and 'Moody Ballad Of Ed'. Ed once revealed that fellow singer-songwriter Damien Rice had been a huge inspiration for him, saying in 2015, "I was only about 11 or 12 years old when I saw Damien play at Whelan's, and that night literally changed my life. The time he spent talking with me after the show made all the difference. It inspired me in a way that I only hope to do for someone else."

2008: Britannia High

In 2008, he moved to London to pursue his music career, playing small venues and busking. In the same year, Ed auditioned for Britannia High at the age of just 16-years-old! The auditions were shown on the telly, with Ed auditioning alongside the likes of Pixie Lott and Skins star Mitch Hewer, to take part in a show all about a fictional theatre school. Although he impressed the judges with his voice, Ed didn't quite have all the skills they were looking for, and did not progress.

2010: SBTV performance of 'You Don't Need Me'

2010 was a fantastic year for Ed - he recorded a studio session for Jamal Edwards' SB.TV, and his live performance of 'You Need Me, I Don't Need You' went viral. Off the back of that, rapper Example invited him on tour, leading Ed to release his critically-acclaimed EP 'Loose Change', which featured his debut single, 'The A-Team'. Watch his incredible SBTV performance on YouTube. Ed's career was picking up by now and the internet loved him. He was gaining celebrity fans in the form of footballers, fellow musicians, and even national newspapers. Within that year, he was invited to perform at The Foxxhole, a club run by actor Jamie Foxx, who also invited him to stay at his home.

2011: 'No. 5 Collaborations Project'

On 8th January 2011, Ed released yet another independent EP, 'No. 5 Collaborations Project', featuring UK grime artists such as Wiley, JME, Devlin, and Ghetts which gained mainstream attention. At its peak, the project reached Number 2 in the iTunes charts with over 7,000 first week sales. Within that month Ed had signed to Asylum Records. Ed's international success began on 26th April 2011 when he appeared on Later... with Jools Holland, where he first performed his debut single. 'The A-Team' served as the lead single from his debut studio album '+' and the single sold 58,000 copies in the first week, becoming a top ten hit in eight countries.

His debut album reached Number 1 on the UK albums chart in 2011, selling over 790,000 copies, and became the second best-selling debut album. Today, the album is 6x Platinum and has sold over one million copies. Later in 2011, Ed shared his talents and co-wrote the song, 'Moments', on the debut album by the boy band One Direction. This was the start of Ed Sheeran's hugely successful songwriting career.
