Normally at this stage of the competition the Love Island couples are all madly in love and gushing about one another during their final dates, but not this year! Despite being together from Day 1, viewers witnessed Jake Cornish and Liberty Poole split in emotional scenes just days ahead of the final.

After revealing to Faye Winter she 'couldn't do it anymore', Liberty called things off with boyfriend Jake, telling him she's not able to change for him.

But it was the preview clip for Friday night's episode that left viewers on edge...

In the short clip, Jake and Liberty head out on a luxury yacht for their final date, before arriving back at the villa with what looks to be an important announcement, asking their fellow Islanders to gather around the fire pit.

A source has now seemingly confirmed the news, telling Mail Online: "It was a really tough decision for the couple to make, but it felt like the right thing to do. They'd given it their all on camera and wanted to let their friends in other couples have a chance at winning.

"Saying goodbye was emotional for all the Islanders, as they've become so close, like family, but it won't be long before they're all reunited.

"It's not 100 per cent over for Jake and Liberty, there are still a lot of feelings involved, so who knows what will happen on the future."

Following last night's scenes, fans of the hit ITV2 show were convinced that Jake and Liberty had made the decision to QUIT the show, just three days before the big final.

One fan wrote: 'Bets on Jake & Liberty announcing they will leave as friends and let a genuine couple win', with another adding: 'Prediction - Jake and Liberty will agree to leave so there'll be no vote for the final four couples.'

Another added: 'What could Jake and Liberty’s decision possibly be Thinking face?? My guess is they made a decision to leave the villa together as a couple to figure things out on the outside #loveisland' (sic)

A fourth commented: 'Liberty and Jake are gonna leave the villa together. Calling it now #LoveIsland' (sic)

If it's anything like previous year's, one more couple will be dumped from the villa before the final on Monday 23rd August, with fans expected to be given the power to vote for their favourites this weekend.

After 53 days together in the Love Island villa, Jake and Liberty ended their romance during Thursday night's show, with Liberty taking off her bracelet she received when Jake asked her to be his girlfriend.

Speaking to Jake, Lib said: “I just don’t feel like that you love me for me and I want someone who loves me for me.”

Jake asked: “What we saying then, are we saying we’ll go our separate ways then?", before the pair decided they are better off as friends.

Love Island continues every night at 9pm on ITV2.
