Fire crews deal with major restaurant blaze near St Austell

Crews from eight stations were called out to deal with the fire early this morning

Fire crews have been dealing with a major restaurant kitchen fire at Kingswood Restaurant near St Austell this morning.

The blaze broke out on London Apprentice just after 1.55am on Friday 26 April.

The road to Mevagissey and Gorran was also closed due to the fire at Kingswood Restaurant affecting the 274 Truro College service and the 29 service. This has since reopened.

In a post on social media, Pentewan Valley Parish Council member Toni Dowrick said: "Truly devastating to see a lovely, local family business, in ruins this morning."

Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service said: "Two appliances from St Austell and Mevagissey responded to this incident as well as a wholetime officer.

"On arrival a fire involving a restaurant kitchen was discovered. Crews made pumps six and requested the attendance of the aerial ladder platform from Truro. The request additional resources were mobilised to the incident from St Dennis, Fowey and Lostwithiel.

"Specialist vehicles including the Incident Command Unit from Launceston, the Operational Support Vehicle from St Austell and the welfare vehicle from Perranporth also formed part of the attendance.

"Crews have sectorised the incident and continue to make good progress.

"The incident is scaling down and crews will continue to monitor the situation throughout the day."

People online have also been sharing messages of support.

The Fisherman Chippy in Mevagissey said: "Our thoughts go out to our friends at Kingswood Bar and Restaurant in London Apprentice, who sadly suffered a major fire last night.

"It has been a much cherished fixture in the local community since it opened, and we wish them all the very best as they deal with this devastating event."
