The UK's first police-backed motorcycle simulator has been revealed, which will tour schools and colleges in Devon & Cornwall as part of an 12-month trial.

Using a real motorbike – a Honda CB500X – the simulator is operated using custom software to test rider’s hazard awareness skills, with authentic controls including brakes, clutch, throttle, and indicators to replicate real-life road conditions.

A force spokesperson said: "Motorcyclists are one of the most vulnerable road user groups – both nationally and across Devon & Cornwall. Despite making up just 1% of total traffic, motorcyclists account for almost 25% of road deaths.

"Following a successful bid for funding from Department for Transport and Vision Zero South West, the Road Casualty Reduction Team at Devon & Cornwall Police are excited to have received delivery of its state-of-the-art motorcycle road safety simulator.

"The rider is surrounded by seamlessly integrated video screens to provide a truly immersive experience; replicating a huge range of road layouts, weather conditions and driving environments, enhanced by realistic vibration, surround sound and working wing mirrors."
