Former Australian Idol winner Guy Sebastian has been selected to represent Australia at its first ever Eurovision Song Contest.

The 33-year-old, who served as a judge on Australia’s The X Factor between 2010 and 2012, has secured eight top ten albums and two number one singles in his native country.

Following this morning’s announcement at The Sydney Opera house he told ABC News that he was “pumped” to be performing at the event.

He said: “Its Eurovision, it’s huge and keeps growing here in Australia which is nice."

However he hasn’t yet decided which song to perform.

“That is still being worked out,” he continued. “I know that I can't sing something that has been released prior to September, so it doesn't leave me with a lot.

"Luckily enough I released my album in November... which narrows it down a little bit or I could write something in the next few days.

"I want it to represent us as a nation well but also just be fun or be emotional. Either super fun or like a big ballad or something that showcases my voice.”

Australia was given a wildcard entry to this year’s Eurovision as part of the competition’s 60th anniversary.

The country has been fast-tracked to the grand final and therefore will not compete in earlier rounds.

The singing competition is hugely popular in Australia, with three million people viewing last year’s event.

This year’s Eurovision Song Contest will take place on 23rd May in Vienna, Austria.
