Rihanna, who was co-hosting the gala alongside Anna Wintour, Donatella Versace and Amal Clooney, channelled the pope with her outfit. Her dress, which was covered in pearls, took an incredible 250 hours to sew and was hand embroidered over 500 hours by Maison Margiela Atelier in Paris.

Mega-stars Katy Perry and Rihanna later posed for photos alongside designer Donatella Versace.

The event, which takes place on the first Monday of every May, is an annual fundraising gala for the benefit of the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute.

This year's event was co-hosted by Rihanna, Anna Wintour, Donatella Versace and Amal Clooney. Past hosts have included Taylor Swift, Beyoncé, and Katy Perry. The event has been chaired by US Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour since 1995.

This year items such as Pope Benedict XV's white silk cape embroidered with gold thread and the pointed bishop's hat of Pope Leo XIII, which have never left the Vatican's possession before, went on display at the event.

Madonna performed at the event, taking to the stage to sing the very apt 'Like a Prayer'.
