On Monday 7th May stars flocked to the 2018 Met Gala to show off their outfits for the theme 'Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination'. The event, which takes place on the first Monday of every May, is an annual fundraising gala for the benefit of the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute. The gala takes place in New York City and always attracts some of the biggest names in showbiz. This year Katy Perry, Jennifer Lopez, Rihanna, Ariana Grande, Madonna and Kim Kardashian-West were all in attendance and wore some incredible outfits.

Rihanna, who was co-hosting the gala alongside Anna Wintour, Donatella Versace and Amal Clooney, channelled the pope with her outfit. Her dress, which was covered in pearls, took an incredible 250 hours to sew and was hand embroidered over 500 hours by Maison Margiela Atelier in Paris.

Mega-stars Katy Perry and Rihanna later posed for photos alongside designer Donatella Versace.

Ariana Grande made her Met Gala debut wearing a Vera Wang dress complete with a cute bow. Her strapless gown was emblazoned with pictures that paid tribute to Michelangelo's Last Judgment, which is painted on the Sistine Chapel's altar wall.

48-year-old Jennifer Lopez looked like she hadn't aged since her first single 'If You Had My Love' released nearly 20 years ago. The 'Amor Amor Amor' singer looked absolutely sensational in a blue and black Balmain gown complete with a red, blue, green and gold jewelled cross during her 10th Met Gala appearance.

Madonna not only looked incredible in a black Jean Paul Gaultier gown paired with a black net veil and crown, but also put on a performance at the gala. She opened her set with the very fitting 'Like A Prayer'.

And of course not one to be outdone, Kim Kardashian-West wore one of the glitziest dresses of the night with a gold chainmail Versace dress that featured crosses on the bodice and hip.

Now check out some of the weirdly wonderful outfits the stars have worn at the Met Gala in previous years.

'Swish Swish' singer Katy Perry donned enormous, feathered angel wings and a gold chainmail Versace dress. She finished the look with gold thigh-high boots.

The Met Gala was founded by publicist Eleanor Lambert, with the first benefit being held in 1948.

We can't wait to see what outfits everyone wears next year!
