It's been a long time coming, but series three of Ricky Gervais' dark comedy-drama After Life has finally landed on Netflix, with many fans binging all six episodes on Friday 14th January!

Although it's bittersweet after Ricky confirmed series three will be the last ever instalment, our entertainment reporter Olivia Marks caught up with the 60-year-old, where he got very emotional speaking about his award-winning show.

Watch our chat with Ricky Gervais below:

Speaking about the final instalment, Ricky said: "It's bittersweet. You've got to end it sometime. I mean, I could go on, it makes sense to go on really, we've set up all the characters, it's gone down a treat, but I think it's right artistically to end it."

Admitting he was worried if viewers would be able to understand the hard-hitting dark comedy, Ricky added: "When I first came up with the idea I was worried, I thought 'can people take this, can they laugh when they've just seen this guy has lost the love of his life and he's suicidal?' But they can, because real life is like that.

"Real life is like ups and downs, everyday you have a laugh and then you get a terrible text, and people like to see themselves reflected, they like to see real stuff on TV. I think that's why it's a taboo, things like grief, mental health, death, they are still taboos because we don't explore them, and I think that's what comedy is for really, getting us over bad stuff.

"It was never meant to be an explanation to grief, but saying goodbye on the third season is bittersweet, because it's lovely that we've achieved it, filming it in lockdown. I did nearly cry when I said goodbye to the dog. "

Ricky concluded: "You dedicated three years of your life to something. It's nice to start, but it's nice to finish as well."

In case you've never actually watched After Life and are wondering what the whole hype is about, the show follows the life of a man called Tony (played by Ricky Gervais), who finds himself going through the process of grief after sadly losing his wife Lisa to breast cancer.

The show also details Tony's relationship with his work colleagues at the local free paper, as well as the heartwarming relationship he has with his dog Brandy, who is undoubtedly one of the biggest stars of the show.

Speaking to Olivia about whether the show has made him want his own dog, Ricky said: "We've just rescued a cat, so I don't think she would appreciate me bringing home a dog straight away. I travel too much usually, you can leave a cat with a house sitter and it goes 'yeah whatever, just feed me', whereas I can't stand the look on that dog's face if you keep going away every week.

"You know, they only live 15 years, I want to spend every minute of its life."

Now, without giving away any series three spoilers, Tony makes reference in episode one that he thinks he could 'kill Spiderman', so we couldn't let him leave without asking about the all important question... "Could Tony lift Thor's hammer?"

Admitting he'd love to join the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) in some aspect, Ricky said: "I'm afraid Tony has got the same back as me so he'd have to be careful lifting anything.

"I'm up for it, as long as there's sitting down. I'll do any action movies, as long as there's a lot of sitting down."

We can totally imagine this! 🤣

Whilst we wait for Ricky to be cast in the next Marvel movie, After Life series one-three is available to watch on Netflix now.
