Earlier today Tom Cruise appeared on an Australian TV show and confirmed the news that Top Gun fans have been hoping for.

Tom has been in Australia to promote his new film The Mummy and appeared on Sunrise. During the interview the 54-year-old actor was asked about the rumours surrounding a Top Gun 2 film and he surprised the presenter by saying, "yes, it's true".

Although he wouldn't reveal exactly when they would start filming it, he said it would be "some time in the next year".

Exciting news for fans of the film who have been waiting a very long time for a sequel!

Rumours of a sequel to the cult 80s film started in 2016 when film producer Jerry Bruckheimer tweeted a photo of himself with the actor saying, 'Just got back from a weekend in New Orleans to see my old friend @TomCruise and discuss a little Top Gun 2.'

Then in October last year talking to Graham Norton Tom said, "We're trying to figure it out". However it has taken until now to get a full confirmation that it will be happening.

Thirty-one years ago a young Tom Cruise rose to fame after starring in Top Gun, playing the character of Pete 'Maverick' Mitchell.

Top Gun was a military, romantic action film and followed Maverick as he joined the Top Gun Naval Fighter Weapons School where the best pilots went to refine their flying skills.

When Maverick joins the school not only does his attitude get him in trouble with the other pilots, he finds a love interest in his flight instructor Charlotte Blackwood, played by Kelly McGillis.
