Coronation Street fans have been left gobsmacked after evil character Pat Phelan managed to survive, despite dropping into the freezing cold sea on Good Friday.

Viewers couldn't believe their eyes during last night's episode when Phelan popped back up, despite Eileen stamping on his hands to make sure he wouldn't be able to climb back up after he slipped over the edge of the cliff.

In last night's second episode, it was revealed that Phelan had miraculously survived the plunge and was taking refuge in a B&B under a false name.

He had cuts all over his body and after the B&B owner had vacated his room, he pulled back the bed covers to reveal a huge slice up his leg, as he then set about stitching himself up.

But after the initial shock of his survival had worn off, many Corrie viewers had noticed a connection between the timing of Phelan's fall and when he reappeared.

Fans of the show took to Twitter to compare Phelan to Jesus, after he supposedly died on Good Friday before returning on Easter Monday...

And after Eileen was arrested and interrogated for Phelan's crimes, how on earth will Phelan get his comeuppance?!

WATCH: Phelan is alive:

Although it hasn't yet been confirmed if Phelan will return to the cobbles, reports are suggesting the soap will air a number of extra episodes around the time of the Britain's Got Talent final later in the year.

Will we see Phelan return then?

Coronation Street continues on ITV.
