There's been a police cordon in place around a field in Salford overnight, following reports of weapons in the area.

Police say they'll remain on Stanhope Road over the weekend whilst searches are carried out.

They insist though there is no specific threat.

As a precautionary measure, some residents within the area are being spoken to by officers about the possibility of moving to temporary accommodation.

Salford Council is on standby to provide any necessary support, should residents choose to leave.

Chief Inspector Jamie Pearson, from Greater Manchester Police, said:

"While we have spoken to some residents about the leaving their property, this is purely a precautionary measure, as officers begin to search for what has been reported as weapons within the area.

"I understand that this will cause concern within the community, but there is no specific threat and is related to intelligence gathered.

"Local residents who choose to leave their homes will be supported appropriately, and we are working with partners to ensure this is done swiftly and efficiently.

"Officers are expected to be in the area for the weekend and will be more than happy to discuss any concerns you may have."
