LIVE: Great Manchester Run returns for 2021

15,000 runners will set off on a tour of Manchester for the 10k and Half Marathon

15,000 runners are returning to the streets of Manchester as the 10K and Half Marathon for the first time in over two years after being cancelled because of Covid-19.

The route takes in the views of Old Trafford, Coronation Street as well as the Beetham Tower by the finish line.

Celebrities have been taking part in the race too!

Adam Thomas is used his fair share of challenges during his time in the I'm A Celebrity jungle... but he told us he's not quite sure what made him sign up to this.

Our reporter Hannah Norbury is at the halfway mark by Old Trafford...

She's been on the look out for inspirational stories - and Craig certainly ticks that box.

The waves just keep on coming! Look at all those smiles - Manchester is basking in the atmosphere and sunshine.

In first place with a time of 30.52 was GBR runner Eilish McColgan! Second went to Sweden's Meraf Bahta who ran it in 31.44 and in third was another athlete from GBR, Jess Piasecki who completed the 10k in 32.01.

The Elite Women's 10k has JUST set off!

It'll be a pretty quick race so in the mean time, let's take a look at the successes so far this morning. Luke Cotter ran the fastest time in the Half Marathon, first place in the Elite Wheelchair race went to Melanie Woods followed by Hannah Cockroft, the two time gold medallist at this year's Tokyo Paralympics. Luke Cotter was first in the half marathon

Runners are reaching the halfway mark by Old Trafford.

The Elite Women's 10k is due to set off at 11.15am and then Men's at 11.30am. As a special thank you to the NHS, two members of staff have been asked to sound the start line air horn. Tom has been chatting to them:

Runners young and old are making their way through the streets of Manchester. So far this morning we've seen the start of the Half Marathon, Elite Wheelchair 10k and soon the Mini Great Manchester run will set off.

We now have two reporters on the scene! Tom is still at the start line while Hannah Norbury is at the halfway point to see how the runners are getting along.

It's official - THEY'RE OFF!

Runners are starting to gather at the start line and warming up. The Half Marathon will be setting off at 8.30am. Our Chief Reporter Tom Dambach is in among the action for us and will be bringing us the last throughout the morning.

In the run up to this year's events we've been speaking to some of those taking part and this year's organisers about what the event means for Manchester after 18 months of the coronavirus pandemic.

Organisers are hoping the event will be a huge boost for charities, whilst the cast of the hit reality show 'Race Across The World' are running to raise vital funds to build an orphanage in Nepal.
