M61 closed after fatal crash

Lorry driver pronounced dead at the scene

One man's been killed in a crash on the M61 which closed the carriageway Northbound.

It happened at 3.10am this morning between Junction 6 at Howrich and Junction 8 at Chorley.

In a statement Lanacshire Police said:

Emergency services were called at about 3.10am this morning (Friday, August 26th) after an HGV travelling north on the motorway left the carriageway and collided with wooden fencing.

The incident happened about a mile north of the Rivington Services between junctions six and eight.

The driver, the sole occupant of the HGV, was found by passing workmen. He was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

We are appealing for witnesses.

The Northbound carriageway has now reopened.
