The team at York Theatre Royal say they're well prepared for the next few months - whether rules are fully lifted next week or not.

The Prime Minister is expected to announce later today whether the full lifting of rules will still go ahead on the 21st of June.

Tom Bird is the CEO of York Theatre Royal, and says it's good just to be back open again: "It's gone great so far - we've welcomed audiences back in their droves.

"People have been desperate to come back and we've had fabulous programmes since reopening in May.

"Audiences have absolutely loved it, and the feedback has been terrific. People were stopping me in the streets beforehand asking when the theatre would reopen! There's such a hunger for performing arts in York.

"We've tried to put on works that are escapist and allow people to forget about the challenges of the outside world.

"We're ready for either outcome (next week). The one thing that we've tried not to do is second guess or make our own rules - it's easier for everyone to fall in place with whatever the national guidelines are.

"If we're able to un-restrict then we'll go with that; if not we can survive with social distancing into the Autumn. We're ready for whatever the eventuality is.

"For most theatres it's not so much this time of year that's the challenge - it's Christmas that we're thinking about.

"There hasn't been frustration (with capacity); we've known this was coming and the right thing to do.

"The Government has access to science - I'm not a virologist or an immunologist, so I'm going to fall in with what is recommended. I understand it's different in the West End, as we can make a go of it with social distancing in place whereas they would find it harder to do that".
