Casino plans expansion in former railway station

The operators of a Southampton casino have been given the green light for an expansion which will see 10 new jobs created.
Genting Casino tabled a proposal to use the first and second floors of grade II*-listed Terminus House.
The establishment in Terminus Terrace currently operates gambling facilities on the ground floor of the building, which was previously a railway station dating back to the 19th century.
The plans will see the upper levels of the premises converted from vacant office space to provide a new gaming area and bar on the first floor, and staff space on the second floor.
Other changes in the proposal include ramp access throughout the ground floor and a unisex wheelchair-accessible toilet.
A planning statement submitted on behalf of the applicant by agent Turley said: “The development proposals will provide an increased and improved space for the existing casino, as well as enhanced staff facilities and staff offices.
“The development proposal will also preserve the listed building by returning the building to full occupation and in a commercially viable use, and through the internal alterations which will help sustain the longevity of the building fabric.”
The statement said anticipated changes in government legislation will allow licences for land-based casinos to increase the number of machines and tables.
Having the additional space through the proposal would allow Genting to make use of this change to the law, the planning documents said.
The expansion will also create an additional 10 jobs at the casino.
No objections were submitted by residents or statutory consultees.
A report by Southampton City Council planning officer Mark Taylor said the interior of the listed building had been altered over time.
“Re-modelling the interior of this building once more would not be considered adversely harmful,” Mr Taylor’s report said.
Terminus House received listed status in the 1960s. It opened in 1840 as Southampton’s original railway station.
Genting Casino received change of use and listed building consent from the city council through a delegated decision by officers.
