Yesterday MTV announced just some of the performers at this year's MTV VMAs.

The announcement was made across social media with a series of videos featuring the performing artists such as Ed Sheeran, Lorde, The Weeknd, Miley Cyrus, Fifth Harmony, Shawn Mendes and this year's host Katy Perry.

Last month MTV made the announcement that Katy Perry would be hosting the show across social media showing Katy dressed as a 'moonwoman’.

This year MTV have removed the gender specific categories meaning there is no Best Male or Best Female, so Bruno Mars, Kendrick Lamar, Ed Sheeran, Ariana Grande, The Weeknd and Lorde will fight it out for the Best Artist title.

The change to the categories has been welcomed by critics and music fans. These new categories see rapper Kendrick Lamar lead the field with a massive eight nominations, including Video of the Year, Best Hip Hop, and Best Cinematography, all for his single 'HUMBLE'.

Katy is trailing behind Kendrick with five nominations including Best Collaboration, with Calvin Harris on 'Feels', Best Pop and Best Direction for 'Chained To The Rhythm'. Meanwhile Canadian singer The Weeknd also has five nods including Artist of the Year.

The much hyped event will take place on the 27th August in California.
