Worship At The Altar Of Metal

Make metal your religion for next year\'s census

A new campaign is underway to get heavy metal recognised as a religion in the UK.

Metal Hammer have launched their bid to have heavy metal recognised was a religion along with their world metal peace ambassador, Biff Byford from Saxon. They will salute the UK’s metal heritage by selecting a different town or city each month and celebrating its sterling contribution to British culture.

"Metal was created here so it must be in the gene pool in the UK, I think!” says Biff. "In the early 80s there was a huge number of great bands and we were all part of the same club, whatever we called ourselves, whether it was heavy rock, rock’n’roll or heavy metal, it made no difference. There was just this huge following of over a million people in the UK and now it’s happening all over again! Getting heavy metal recognised as a religion is a great bit of rebellion, isn’t it? This really is going to be a very cool thing.”

The campaign was inspired by the UK census of 2001 which found that 391,000 stated that their religion was Jedi, making it the fourth most popular religion in the country.

The next UK census takes place in 2011 and the aim is to get heavy metal recognised officially when the results are announced later that year.
