Doves have performed their soaring anthem ‘Prisoners’ exclusively for Absolute Radio.

Preceding the release of Doves' sublime fifth studio album ‘The Universal Want’ today (11th September), last night Doves frontman Jimi Goodwin and drummer Andy Williams joined Danielle Perry on her show for a long overdue catch-up about the new record and much more.

As well as having a chat, the Wilmslow trio performed in session exclusively for Absolute Radio, playing their 2009 anthem ‘Kingdom of Rust’ and current single ‘Prisoners’, which is on heavy rotation on our airwaves.

Watch Doves perform ‘Prisoners’ for Absolute Radio:

Andy Williams says of ‘Prisoners’: “It’s about continually chasing something and not being satisfied when you eventually get it. You’ve got ‘that thing’ and you find you’re not any happier. Be careful what you wish for.”

Alongside ‘Prisoners’, Doves’ first studio album in 11 years ‘The Universal Want’ also boasts the socially rich anthem ‘Carousels’ featuring a drum beat sample from Fela Kuti legend Tony Allen, plus the gorgeous ‘Cathedrals in the Mind’ that the band premiered last month.

After a long decade away, Jimi Goodwin, Andy Williams and Jez Williams returned from their hiatus last year for a number of concerts including a Teenage Cancer Trust series show at London’s Royal Albert Hall.

Their first official show back was a warm-up gig for the Teenage Cancer Trust show at Warrington Parr Hall in March 2019.

In January 2020, Doves broke the good news that the follow-up to April 2009’s ‘Kingdom of Rust’ was on the way.

Alongside a black-and-white photo of recording studio sound desk, Doves wrote: “News update!! Putting the finishing touches to the last song for album no 5. Mastering is in March.

Guitarist Jez Williams says of ‘The Universal Want’: “It’s definitely got the stamp of ‘the time’ all over it. Everything on the album is an echo. It’s an echo of what we were going through at the time. Getting back together, the Royal Albert Hall and everything else.”
