EXCLUSIVE: Biffy Clyro's James Johnston reveals that a new album is already in the works

Never ones to shy away from the studio for long, it seems that Scottish rockers Biffy Clyro already have their sights set on recording another new album, less than nine months after the release of their latest album 'A Celebration Of Endings'.

Our very own Danielle Perry caught up with Biffy Clyro bass player, James Johnston recently where he revealed that a self-produced follow-up album was already in the works.

While he didn't reveal too many details about the new album, James did say, "It's a really exciting record. We're really buzzing on the progress we're making and having a lot of fun doing it."

He added, "I think because we're doing it all ourselves, there seems to be a freedom that has come from somewhere else. There's nobody else telling us that we have to go to the studio or that we're being too loud and there's nobody else looking over our shoulder."

However, James also shared that recording their new material was going to be challenging for the time being as his brother, Biffy Clyro drummer Ben Johnston had recently tested positive for COVID-19.

He said, "I've just come home from the COVID test centre. I've been identified as a contact by NHS test and trace, because my younger brother has tested positive and he came over to mine on the weekend with the kids. So that's me in the house now for a week in the middle of making an album."

While they might not be able to be in the studio together right now, at least the Scottish rockers can revel in their recent BRIT award nomination for Best British Group. This is the third time the band have been nominated for the award.

Of the nomination, James said, "It's really nice to get the acknowledgement, you know, we're not too cool to say that. If we don't win, we'll not be too disappointed and if we do win, we'll celebrate like hell."

James also commented on the variety of acts that were included in the Brit award categories this year, "It's nice to see the state of British music, and it's really nice to see so many females being nominated. I think that's something worth talking about. I think it's a long time coming and I think the industry should do what it can to make things a more level playing field."

Despite their eagerness to get back on tour and perform for their fans, Biffy Clyro were forced to postpone their Fingers Crossed Tour for a second time just a few weeks ago. The run of six dates, which were originally planned for Autumn 2020, were intended to support their latest album 'A Celebration Of Endings' but were postponed due to COVID-19 restrictions.

With the rescheduled dates now planned for October and November 2021, James shared that the band are already anticipating their first time being back on stage to be an emotional one.

"I've got a feeling when you walk on stage, you're gonna have to take a minute, I don't think we can just walk on stage and jump straight into the first song. I think we need to maybe stand there and stare at each other and soak up the crowd and just take all in and try not have a breakdown."

The BRIT Awards 2021 will air on Tuesday 11th May.
