Bruce Springsteen, Queen of the Stone Age’s Josh Homme, and The Strokes’ Albert Hammond Jr. and Nikolai Fraiture are among the big-name musicians contributing to a Livestream celebrating what would have been Joe Strummer’s 68th birthday later this week.

The two-hour Livestream called ‘A Song For Joe: Celebrating the Birthday of Joe Strummer’ will be available to watch for free on Joe Strummer’s official website and YouTube channel at 8pm this Friday (21st August).

Honouring the late Clash frontman’s enduring legacy, ‘A Song For Joe’ will feature live performances and testimonials by many of Strummer’s friends and eminent names in the music & arts community.

Other musicians set to feature include Rage Against The Machine’s Tom Morello, The Gaslight Anthem’s Brian Fallon, Bob Weir, Frank Turner, Dhani Harrison, former Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist Josh Klinghoffer, The Pogues’ Spider Stacy, and Lucinda Williams.

Actors Steve Buscemi and Matt Dillon will also guest, along with politician Beto O’Rourke and esteemed artist Shepard Fairey.

“To see so many musicians and artists come forward to honor Joe is really touching,” says Joe Strummer’s wife Lucinda Tait.

“Community was always important to him. Whether it was playing music with friends, organizing all night campfires, or hijacking festivals, Joe was always focused on bringing people together. Even though we can't all be in the same room together, I cannot think of a better way for us all to feel united. Joe would have loved this.”

Although the event is free to watch, viewers can make voluntary donations to Save Our Stages, which is helping independent live music venues and promoters in the USA during the Covid-19 crisis.

Joe Strummer died of an undiagnosed congenital heart defect on 22nd December 2002 aged 50.
