Liam Gallagher: Everything you need to know about the 'Better Days' singer

From Oasis to Beady Eye to solo megastar...

Author: Julian MarszalekPublished 20th Mar 2024

He may have split from Oasis over a decade ago, but Liam Gallagher has truly made a name for himself as a solid solo superstar. Having released four albums, starting with his debut album 'As You Were' in 2017, Liam has also released bangers such as 'All You're Dreaming of' and 'Too Good For Giving Up'.

He's even given some AI-generated Oasis music his stamp of approval - but nothing could match up to the real thing, of course. Here's everything we know about the rock megastar and what he's up to, including his 2024 tour.

Where is Liam Gallagher from?

Like his brother Noel Gallagher, Liam was born in Longsight, Manchester. He was born on 21st September 1972 and raised in Burnage, also in Manchester. In October 2023, Liam lent his voice to Manchester's Metrolink trams for a week as he voiced the passenger announcements.

Unlike his older sibling, Liam showed little interest in music as a teenager, but he claims that all that changed after he’d been hit on the head by hammer during a fight. Fascinated by the music of The Beatles, The Kinks and The Jam, he then decided to become a singer after seeing The Stone Roses playing live in Manchester.

Which other bands was Liam Gallagher in?

Liam Gallagher gained equal amounts of fame and notoriety as frontman of Oasis, the band that pretty much came to define Britpop in the mid-90s.

Oasis evolved from a band called Rain that Liam formed with his pals guitarist Paul 'Bonehead' Arthurs, bassist Paul McGuigan and drummer Tony McCarroll in 1991. They came to the attention of Liam's brother Noel Gallagher, who’d just returned from the US after working as a roadie for Madchester band Inspiral Carpets. With Noel taking over all songwriting duties, Liam was the newly-christened Oasis’ charismatic frontman.

After being discovered by Creation Records boss Alan McGee at a typically rowdy gig at King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut in Glasgow, Oasis soon defined the zeitgeist. Their first album, ‘Definitely Maybe’ (1994), was, at the time, the fastest-selling debut album in British chart history. 1996’ ‘(What’s The Story) Morning Glory’ zoomed to the top of the charts the world over, while their third album, ‘Be Here Now’ (1997), became the fastest-selling album in UK history.

Despite line-up changes that saw the departure of Bonehead, Paul McGuigan, Tony McCarroll and even his replacement, Alan White, and the arrival of guitarist Gem Archer and bassist Andy Bell, Oasis proved to be a bankable live draw, even if albums ‘Standing On The Shoulder Of Giants’ (2000) and ‘Heathen Chemistry’ (2002), failed to match the success of their predecessors.

Oasis’ last two albums, ‘Don’t Believe The Truth’ (2005) and ‘Dig Out Your Soul’ (2008) found the band re-discovering their mojo, but it wasn’t to last. Years of internecine fighting and sibling rivalry all came to head when Liam is reported have attacked Noel backstage at the Rock en Seine festival in Paris on 28th August 2009. With just minutes to go show time, Noel quit the band, thus the performance, and Oasis were over.

So what was Beady Eye all about, then?

According to Liam, the remaining members of Oasis – guitarist Gem Archer, bassist Andy Bell and drummer Chris Sharrock – went back to their hotel in Paris and decided to carry on under the name Beady Eye.

Beady Eye released two albums – ‘Different Gear, Still Speeding’ (2011) and ‘BE’ (2013). Despite saying they’d never play any Oasis songs, they performed ‘Rock’n’Roll Star’ and ‘Morning Glory’ when supporting The Stone Roses at their comeback gig at Manchester’s Heaton Park in June 2012.

They also played ‘Wonderwall’ during the closing ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic games.

Despite their best efforts, Beady Eye didn’t really catch on and announced their split in 2014. Andy Bell rejoined shoegazers Ride, while Gem Archer and Chris Sharrock – in a somewhat ironic move – found welcome in Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds.

Did Liam Gallagher write on every Oasis song?

Despite Noel Gallagher’s vice-like grip on Oasis’ creative process, he eventually relented and let others have a go. Liam’s first effort, ‘Little James’, appeared on 2000’s ‘Standing On The Shoulder Of Giants’.

He then wrote ‘Songbird’ for the ‘Heathen Chemistry’ album. Released as single in 2003, it reached No. 3 in the UK singles chart.

Other notable Oasis songwriting contributions by Liam Gallagher include ‘Love Like A Bomb’ (co-written with Gem Archer), ‘The Meaning Of Soul’, ‘Guess God Thinks I’m Abel’, ‘I’m Outta Time’ and ‘Ain’t Got Nothin’’.

So did Liam Gallagher write songs on his own albums?

Not single-handedly. Though his first solo album, ‘As You Were’ (2017), contains many solo Liam Gallagher compositions – see ‘Greedy Soul’ and ‘I’ve All I Need’ among others – he also teamed up with producer and songwriter Greg Kustin to help with the album.

Other contributors include songwriter and Miike Snow singer Andrew Wyatt, songwriter Michael Tighe and Cherry Ghost frontman Simon Aldred.

The album spawned the singles ‘Wall Of Glass’, ‘Chinatown’, ‘For What It’s Worth’, ‘Come Back To Me’ and ‘Paper Crown’.

His second album, ‘Why Me? Why Not’ (2019), saw him reunite with the same songwriting team and went straight to Number 1 in the album chart, outselling the rest of the Top 10 combined.

His album with John Squires

On top of releasing three of his own solo albums, Liam released another album in 2024, titled 'Liam Gallagher John Squire', alongside the Stone Roses icon. The album was released on 1st March 2024, and celebrating the release, Liam wrote: 'Mine and John’s new album is out today. It’s crucial, it’s spiritual, it’s celestial, it’s majestical it’s biblical. Turn it up enjoy! LGx'. (sic)

The album is their first collaboration, and marks John's return to releasing new music after a 20-year hiatus. Featuring Liam Gallagher on vocals and John Squire on guitar, the album also saw Greg Kurstin produce and play bass.

Does Liam Gallagher own Pretty Green?

Not anymore. Liam Gallagher launched the Pretty Green fashion brand – named after The Jam song – in 2009, but he sold it to JD Sports in 2019.

Will Liam and Noel reform Oasis?

The Gallagher brothers just can’t help taking swipes at each other - and they show absolutely no signs of letting up either: in one corner, younger brother Liam has claimed that older brother Noel has turned his nose up at a £100m offer to reunite their band Oasis. In the other corner, Noel has dismissed Liam's claims as so much hot air.

Liam seems the keener of the two for an Oasis reunion, although his tweets suggesting that Noel ‘begged’ him to reform the band were totally shut down by his elder brother. In February 2020, Liam tweeted that Noel had refused a £100m deal to reform Oasis, something Noel also strenuously denied.

What was Liam Gallagher: Part With Your Parka?

Liam took part in an initiative to help homeless people in the latter part of 2019, called 'Part With Your Parka'. Joining together with four charities - Shelter, Centre Point, Inner City Helping Homeless and Aberdeen Cyrenians - fans were able to donate coats at points around the UK whilst Liam was on his headline tour, and were then up for the chance to win tickets to a corresponding tour date and meet Liam.
