Stephen Graham stars as Sam Fender's dad in powerful 'Spit Of You' video

Sam Fender has premiered the powerful music video for his song ‘Spit Of You’ starring iconic Liverpool actor Stephen Graham.

Echoing the themes of the song, the video sees Help, This Is England and Time actor Stephen Graham play Sam Fender’s dad, and the pair have a somewhat strained relationship.

The Philip Barantini (Band of Brothers, Chernobyl, Humans) directed video follows the father and son as they hit the boozer, go on a fishing trip, visit a chip shop, and sit side-by-side on the sofa as they neck pints of beer.

With Sam singing the yearning refrain “I can talk to anyone/ I can’t talk to you”, as the song reaches its climax Sam and Stephen start to argue and clash before they embrace at the very end.

Sam Fender says of the video: “This video is so beast! It was the most amazing experience to film with Stephen Graham, genuinely one of the best actors this country has ever seen and such a lovely bloke. So proud of this one!!”

Stephen Graham has previously starred in the videos for Arctic Monkeys’ ‘Fluorescent Adolescent’), Kasabian’s ‘You’re In Love With A Psycho’ and Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds’ Christmassy track ‘Wandering Star.’

Sam Fender previously said of the song: “Spit Of You is a song about boys and their dads. It’s based around my own relationship with my old man, and how we both struggle as blokes to communicate the way we feel to each other without it becoming a stand off.

“It’s about how the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, as I get further into my twenties, I see so much of myself in him, especially when it comes to being stubborn.

“The second half of the song talks about seeing him with my grandma when she passed away, and how I saw him as a son, and how that moment reminded me to make the most of my time with him. If anything, it’s a declaration of love for him.”

Also featuring the Absolute Radio playlisted anthems ‘Seventeen Going Under’ and ‘Get You Down’, Sam Fender’s second studio album ‘Seventeen Going Under’ is released this Friday (8th October).

After triumphing at Isle of Wight Festival last month, Sam Fender plays five sold-out arena shows this November including a homecoming gig at Newcastle Arena and two nights at London’s Alexandra Palace.
